Family Socio-Economic Practices (SEP) and Literacy Engagement in Niger State, Nigeria
Keywords:
family, literacy engagement, socio-economic practiceAbstract
The study investigated the relationship between family socio-economic practices and literacy engagement among residents of Chanchaga Local Government Area, Minna in Niger State. A correlational survey design was adopted for the study. The sample size of 383 respondents was obtained using Research Advisor's Sample Size Table. The instrument used was the self-developed questionnaire with both structured and unstructured items. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to analyse each of the underlying factors in the concept of socio-economic practices including support for girl-child education to obtain the data. Results obtained show a significant relationship between each pair of the attributes except in the relationship between occupation and literacy demand. This suggests that there is a changing dynamic in this, perhaps, because of high unemployment and underemployment among educated persons. Among its recommendations, therefore, is that government, at all levels, should ensure an effective implementation of the 6-3-3-4 system to provide functional education.
